Chapter Ten
Lucy
I hadnât worn this dress in a year at least. I wasnât even sure if it would fit. Swinging a hammer while chiseling rock adds some muscle. It was a black, one-shoulder Manhattan gown. It hugged my body all the way down. I didnât have a strapless bra that would work with it, which means my nipples would show if it was cold. At least I wore panties. Black ones.
Daniel Miller will not see these panties.
That was a promise to myself.
I just hoped I could keep it.
I added some heels, some sparkly earrings, and I tied my hair back with a single band, gathered at the nape of my neck. I didnât usually put on much makeup, but I found myself putting some on. For Daniel? I hated to admit it.
But we werenât going to have sex tonight.
âAre you ready, Lucy?â I heard Daddy call.
âYes, Daddy. Just one minute more.â I puffed some perfume in the air and walked through it, the way Iâd read about in a magazine.
I hurried carefully to the garage where Daddy waited for me with the car running. I slipped in and tried to fasten my seatbelt.
âAre you sure you need to come?â he asks, pausing, uncertain.
Does he wonder what Mr. Miller really wants with me? This dress isnât exactly what an assistant would wear to a work meeting. âI can stay home if you want,â I say, half hoping heâll say yes, half dreading it.
âNo.â He comes to a decision. âYou have a way with people. Always have. Youâll smooth over any awkward moments. Iâm still not to sure of my position.â
Danielâs house was in an exclusive part of the city. Gated entryway and roaming security guards. Not a place that the average person could afford. Daniel must have been doing very well at being an Ice Man.
The house was an absolute mansion. It must have had a dozen bedroomsâwell, maybe not, but thatâs what it seemed like. A woman in a housekeeperâs uniform greeted us at the door.
âMr. Miller is waiting up on the balcony for you,â she said pleasantly. âOh, and Iâm Ira. Please let me or the other staff know if you need anything.â
She led us to the grand staircase and just pointed upward. She then disappeared through a service doorway.
âAre you ready, Lucy?â asked Daddy. He took my arm in his and we went slowly up the stairs. Slow, because I was in heels, but also because Daddy didnât do stairs so well. I worried about his heart.
âAh, you made it, I see,â said Daniel, greeting us at the top of the stairs. âThis way, please.â He led us through a few doorways and to an open balcony that looked out onto the back garden of his property. It was perfectly landscaped. A lush swimming pool with a fountain occupied a prime spot on one end of the grounds.
A girl in a simple black dress appeared with a tray of wine glasses. She offered each of us a glass, and then vanished as quickly as she had appeared.
